Attention Grabber:  Activity
You duties for this role are fairly similar to that of those in role two when you wrote your script accompanying your section of the PowerPoint.  Now, instead of scripting what will be said during the PowerPoint, you are generating what will be said during the activity portion of the presentation.  When composing this, try your best to put yourself in the role of a teacher.  What things are necessary for students to know to successfully participate in your activity?  Be certain to be explicit in your script writing.  You need to make your expectations and instructions very clear; otherwise, the activity portion of your presentation will appear chaotic and poorly planned.  Also, just as with the script for the PowerPoint, clearly indicate who states each line and provide stage directions. 

Using the “Brainstorming Day” from class, gather all necessary supplies and materials that will be needed for the activity.  Responsibilities may include but are not limited to, creating questions, cards, documents, or posters.  You are in charge of all materials or props that your group may need for every presentation (including on the school-wide presentation day).








Scrapbook Pages

Scrapbook
Create 2 scrapbook pages that document your experience in symposium.   You are required to make/purchase 2 scrapbook pages (size: 12 x 12).  In addition, your pages should be neatly and creatively organized and include the following information:

The year
Full names of your group members- (spelled correctly)
The teacher’s name
A photograph of your group
A visual representation of your topic (symbol, logo, sign, photograph, etc.)
Other pertinent information on your topic that you hope that students will remember.
Your final statement of social injustice and your topic (can be up to 2 sentences).

Building Hall Display

Main Building Hall Display
You will be given a small display case in which you will visually present your topic in an engaging and creative way that strives to encourage interest in your cause. Display cases vary in size and location, however you will be allowed to visit and measure your space prior to the due date (various types of display cases can be found around the school, typically at the top of the stairs of each major school building). It is important that you utilize your space effectively. Take into consideration the location and height of your display when designing your exhibit. Your goal is to create a display (preferably 3-D) that will engage as well as disseminate valuable information to your viewer. Your group members’ names must be clearly visible in the display.

You should create a write-up to go in the portfolio explaining your exhibit. The write-up should include the following: title of your project, the materials that went into creating the display, specific identification of where your display is located, and an explanation of your exhibit and why you chose to present it the way that you did.











Anticipatory Set

Attention Grabber:  Anticipatory Set

The attention grabber is the very first thing that you will do in your presentation.  This sets the tone for your entire presentation and gives audience members a flavor of what they can expect to see in the rest of your presentation.  Think of it as the first impression you will make on the class.  Since it comes right at the beginning, it is vitally important that put time, energy, and thought into it.  Your job is come up with something that will “catch” audience members’ attention and make them want to listen to you and your teammates.  This can come in the form of an activity, video clip, skit, game, questionnaire, etc. (we will discuss in greater detail possible ideas).  You must not use previously created materials (i.e. YouTube video clips) in their entirety to fulfill your requirement.  The anticipatory set must be at least 50% of your original work.  Do not get too overwhelmed by this responsibility.  You will be working with your teammates to brainstorm ideas to ensure a quality opener.  While the responsibility of what you will be doing is shared amongst group members, it is your job to make certain that you complete all of the necessary work that is required for the attention grabber.  This includes writing the script for this portion of the presentation as well as gathering any props, videos, music, etc. that are needed. 


 







Non-Profit Community Activism

Get involved with a local non-profit in your community.  Do something active to make a difference in your community pertaining to your topic. 

PART 1: Non-Profit/Community Activism
Some influence or activism of your topic within the community.  You must provide proof (video or pictures) that you fulfilled this category.  Submit a write-up that demonstrates your involvement.
Complete 2 out of the following:
- Letter to a public representative (bring in addressed envelope, ready to mail, not sealed)
- Volunteering (connect w/ a non-profit) – provide proof
- Speak publicly about your issue - provide proof
- Create a brochure to bring awareness to your topic and distribute copies publicly – provide proof

Script

Since the script will be a document that accompanies the PowerPoint, your job for your portion of the presentation is to put into words what each person in your group should say as each slide is shown to your audience. With this in mind, it would be beneficial to finish your PowerPoint first, and then create a script for each of the slides.  The script is your opportunity to elaborate upon the information presented on the slides.  The script pertaining to each slide should be entered at the bottom (notes section) of each PowerPoint slide or on a separate paper.

Research-Research your topic using a variety of resources.  You must have a minimum of 5 sources. You may share, or overlap any of these sources by using different parts of the resource. Students will be most successful when they choose from a variety of sources. All research (graded individually) will be turned in as a group in a binder with four clearly marked tabs labeling the name of each member.
